A Guide to Evergreen Magnolia

Our evergreen Magnolia stock is looking particularly fabulous! But which variety is best for your design or landscaping project?

Magnolia grandiflora 'Exmouth'

Exmouth Magnolia Tree, Southern Magnolia Tree (evergreen)

A beautiful summer flowering tree, best known for its large, brilliant white flowers. Leaves are large and glossy green with furry brown undersides. It is upright in its growth habit and develops a conical shape as it matures. Relatively fast growing and hardy, this is a versatile tree, tolerant of a range of conditions.

Magnolia grandiflora 'Coolwyn Gloss' ™

Southern Magnolia Tree (Evergreen)

This is a lovely tree to 10m tall which makes it ideal as a feature in a residential setting. It has beautiful glossy dark green leaves with velvety brown undersides and white fragrant flowers up to 30cm in diameter. We see this as an alternative to 'Exmouth' with a similar upright branching structure but with glossier green leaves.

Magnolia grandiflora 'Little Gem'

Little Gem Magnolia Tree (evergreen)

This is a lovely tree which flowers from an early age, producing beautiful creamy white, saucer shaped flowers in spring and summer. Leaves are a classic glossy deep green colour with furry brown undersides forming a nice compact evergreen tree with a dense covering of foliage. A hardy and reliable variety which makes it a consistently solid performer in the landscape.

Magnolia grandiflora 'Kay Parris'

Kay Parris Magnolia Tree, Southern Magnolia Tree (evergreen)

A beautiful dense tree with small mid-green glossy leaves and brown velvety underside. It produces creamy white fragrant flowers anytime during the warmer months from November through March. The tree grows denser and flowers are bigger than 'Little Gem', making this a popular alternative. It differentiates itself from other varieties by its wavy edge to its leaf and its bright pink new growth.

Magnolia grandiflora 'Teddy Bear' ™

Teddy Bear Magnolia Tree (evergreen)

This is an evergreen, upright growing magnolia reaching 4m. Being naturally dense in habit, with a tight, compact form, it is ideal used as an informal hedge. Leaves are large and rounded - glossy and dark green on top with felted, bronze undersides. Sporadic large white flowers appear during the warmer months from late spring through to autumn.

Magnolia grandiflora 'Sweet Carolina' ™

Sweet Carolina Magnolia Tree (evergreen)

'Sweet Carolina' is a medium growing evergreen tree to 4m tall. It has glossy mid-green leaves and stunning huge creamy white flowers with a heavy perfume in spring and summer. Light burgundy new growth in spring is very attractive.

Magnolia grandiflora 'Sweet 'n' Neat' ™

Sweet n Neat Magnolia Tree (evergreen)

This is a new selection of evergreen Magnolia suitable for little spaces in full sun or part shade. Foliage grows full and is, therefore, more compact than similar hybrids such as 'Sweet Carolina'. Large creamy white flowers are produced through summer and autumn.

Magnolia grandiflora 'Sweet Spire'™

Sweet Spire Magnolia Tree (evergreen)

This is a new selection of evergreen Magnolia suitable for little spaces in full sun or part shade. 'Sweet Spire' grows upright and slim with dark green leaves. It produces creamy white flowers from spring to autumn.

Magnolia (syn. Michelia) doltsopa x laevifolia 'Inspiration'

Inspiration Magnolia Tree (evergreen)

This is a larger growing hybrid with dark green leaves, dense habit and a beautifully sweet scent from white cupped flowers that adorn the tree in spring. Adds height to the garden growing to 4m tall.

Magnolia (syn. Michelia) laevifolia x figo 'White Caviar'

White Caviar Magnolia (Tree (evergreen)

This is a cross between two of the most popular, attractive and hardy Michelia varieties; yunnanensis (syn. laevifolia) and figo. A highly ornamental, medium-sized evergreen with a narrow form and dense habit, it is perfect for screening, hedging and espalier. It produces medium-sized, fragrant, creamy white flowers in late spring/early summer which makes it a great stand-alone specimen in the garden as well.
