Beautiful Winter Bare-limbed Trees

Including one or more deciduous trees with showy, ornamental bark in your garden will create a landscape with year-round interest.

Acer buergerianum

Trident Maple

This is a small deciduous tree with ascending branches when young, maturing to a more rounded canopy. Leaves are small, triangular and tri lobed. New spring foliage is a rich bronzy-red colour maturing to a dark green in summer. In autumn foliage turns yellow to orange to red. Bark is a pale grey-brown orange and appears scaly or flaky. Flowers are green and inconspicuous.

Acer palmatum 'Sango Kaku' (syn. 'Senkaki')

Coral Bark Japanese Maple

This tree has attractive double serrated leaves with five to nine lobes. They are green in colour during spring and then turn a bright yellow with an orange tinge at autumn. The striking bark turns a brighter red in winter providing colour throughout the year.

Betula pendula fastigiata

Upright Silver Birch

This tree has an unusual growth habit, the branches intertwine with each other and grow inwards thus producing an erect habit. The leaves are triangular shape and have a serrated edge. They change from green to butter yellow in autumn. The ornamental white trunk sheds in sheets paper thin. It has deep black fissures in the lower trunk. This tree looks fantastic during its dormant period.

Betula pendula 'Moss White'

Moss White Silver Birch

This tree has bright green foliage that turns to a pale yellow in Autumn. The trunk is a grey colour when young gradually turning to white. It produces long hanging pale green catkins. 'Moss White' has been selected for its bright white bark.

Lagerstroemia indica x fauriei 'Sioux'

Crepe Myrtle (hot musk pink)

Creating quite the visual impact over a lengthy period, this variety offers masses of intense, pink flowers over summer, followed by stunning, rich foliage colour in tones of yellow, red and orange through autumn, before shedding its leaves. When mature, the bark of this variety will peel, creating a mottled effect to reveal the beautiful caramel-pink colour of its underbark.

Lagerstroemia indica x fauriei 'Natchez'

Crepe Myrtle (white)

This small, deciduous tree creates great interest throughout the year. In summer, clusters of spectacular white, crepe-paper like flowers are produced. Following this, the dark green leaves add further interest as they transition into autumn, turning a rich bronze-red colour before falling. Bark also provides colour as the tree matures, with its flakiness revealing the rich, brown underbark. A beautiful growth habit and resistant to mildew, this variety will tolerate periods of dryness once established.
