Syzygium australe 'SAN01' Straight and Narrow ™
Straight and Narrow Lilly Pilly Tree
|
| Description | This is a lovely hardy foliage-feature tree with refreshing lime new growth and dense foliage to the ground. A great option for hedging or screening to around 5m tall. In summer, some white fluffy flowers appear, berry production is unlike other Lilly Pillies, with minimal quantities of small edible deep to light mauve berries that don't stain surfaces if left or crushed. | A native shrub with a dense habit. This is a fast-growing variety well suited to hedging and screens. Compact glossy green foliage develops a lovely coppery hue in the new growth. During the warmer months, white fluffy blossom are borne, followed by fleshy red berries. | This Lilly Pilly is a better form than the narrow growing 'Pinnacle' due to its dense foliage and naturally columnar form. Foliage is a mid-green colour and fruits are reddish-pink. As the name suggests it is a great selection for narrow spaces. |

| Uses | A good selection for hedging or screening, or as a topiary feature. Suitable for planting near pools as it has a fibrous root system with a smaller footprint. A great alternative to Ficus hillii 'Flash' where larger root systems are a concern, or where green foliage needs to be maintained through Winter as 'Sublime isn't susceptible to yellowing or spotting from the cold. | Used widely as a hedging or screening plant. Also can be used to add colour and texture to gardens. Great addition to a native style garden. The berries can be used for jams, and infusing gin etc, but are recommended to be eaten raw. | This is a narrow, compact Lilly Pilly suitable for hedging or screening in tight planting spaces. Would also be ideal along tight driveways and along fences if you require a little height. This variety could easily be used as an Australian native alternative to the Italian pencil pines. The berries can be used for jams, and infusing gin etc, but are recommended to be eaten raw. |
| Position & Soil | Plant in full sun to part shade. Does tolerate a wide range of conditions including heavy clay loams and is tolerant of drought and coastal situations. Like most species, 'Sublime' prefers fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Tolerates light frosts but expect tip burn with heavy frosts. Coastal plantings require protection. Fertilise with slow release fertiliser in late winter and early autumn. | Will tolerate most soils in a full sun to part shade position. Enjoys moist, well drained soils. | Prefers full sun to part shade. This variety is tolerant of cold and dry periods once established. Only occasional pruning is required to maintain a neat shape and dense coverage. |
