Our Guide to Lilly Pillies | Recommendations for Hedging & Screening Trees

Lilly Pilly is the common name grouping given to trees in the Acmena, Syzygium and Waterhousea genera. They are popular lines for ornamental horticulture, in particular for full and lush hedges and screens Our recommendations here are based on height and desired outcome.

Syzygium australe 'Backyard Bliss'

Backyard Bliss Lilly Pilly

This is a relatively fast-growing Lilly Pilly, growing approximately 3-4 metres tall depending on soil conditions. It is a good option for a hedge or dense screen around a courtyard or pool. It can also be planted as a container specimen for topiary. Foliage is mid-green to dark-green, whilst new foliage has a beautiful bronze tinge. In summer, cream-white blossom will appear, followed in autumn with fleshy pink berries.

Acmena smithii 'DOW30' Sublime ™ (syn. Syzygium)

Sublime Creek Lilly Pilly Tree

This is a lovely hardy foliage-feature tree with refreshing lime new growth and dense foliage to the ground. A great option for hedging or screening to around 5m tall. In summer, some white fluffy flowers appear, berry production is unlike other Lilly Pillies, with minimal quantities of small edible deep to light mauve berries that don't stain surfaces if left or crushed.

Syzygium australe 'Hinterland Gold'

Hinterland Gold Lilly PIlly

A native shrub with a dense habit. This is a fast-growing variety well suited to hedging and screens. Compact glossy green foliage develops a lovely coppery hue in the new growth. During the warmer months, white fluffy blossom are borne, followed by fleshy red berries.

Waterhousea floribunda 'ST1' Whisper (syn. Syzygium)

Whisper Weeping Lilly Pilly

Unique to Speciality Trees and our best-selling and most popular tree! This is a versatile, bushy tree with a wonderful weeping habit making it perfect for large screening projects and the softening of fence lines. Propagated from Victorian mother-stock, unlike other Waterhousea, so responds better to all weather conditions, including cooler climates. New growth starts off pink and orange with leaves turning to various shades of green as the foliage matures. Foliage is maintained to the base of the plant giving a year-round lush, full appearance. It forms a small quantity of creamy-white flowers in summer. Berry production on 'Whisper' is unlike other Lilly Pillies, with minimal quantities of small green berries that, whilst bird attracting, these fruits are tucked in amongst the foliage and are not obvious.

Syzygium australe 'SAN01' Straight and Narrow ™

Straight and Narrow Lilly Pilly

This Lilly Pilly is a better form than the narrow growing 'Pinnacle' due to its dense foliage and naturally columnar form. Foliage is a mid-green colour and fruits are reddish-pink. As the name suggests it is a great selection for narrow spaces.
