Lilly Pilly is the common name grouping given to trees in the Acmena, Syzygium and Waterhousea genera.

They are popular lines for ornamental landscaping and in particular for hedging and screening, where fresh new growth often starts out an attractive pinkish-red colour turning green as foliage matures. Their ability to hedge and screen make them a cherished and versatile landscape tree.

We can't forget that another identifying characteristic of lily pillies are the cream, red or purple berries they produce. Considered a deterrent to purchase for some people, they are an important characteristic of the group and easily minimised if the tree or trees are pruned directly after flowering.

With a berry management plan in mind, the use of Acmena, Syzygium and Waterhousea in the landscape is highly valued, as options for formal or informal blockout, and as selections for defining space and in giving structure to landscape designs. Some say they are the backbone of Australian backyards.

While there are many lines and varieties to consider on the market, the following selections are tried and true performers, and ones we highly recommend.

For narrow spaces try:

Syzygium 'Straight and Narrow' growing 5-8m tall x 1-1.5m wide
Syzygium 'Backyard Bliss' growing 3-4m tall x 1-2m wide

For bigger spaces try:

Acmena 'Sublime' growing 5m tall x 2-3m wide
Szyzgium 'Hinterland Gold' growing 6m tall x 3m wide
Waterhousea 'Whisper' growing 8m tall x 5m wide*

All are suitable for growing as a formal hedge (clipped to shape) or informal screen

*Waterhousea floribunda 'Whisper' is our most popular tree line for screening off structures or neighbours.

This is a relatively fast-growing Lilly Pilly, growing approximately 3-4 metres tall depending on soil conditions. It is a good option for a hedge or dense screen around a courtyard or pool. It can also be planted as a container specimen for topiary. Foliage is mid-green to dark-green, whilst new foliage has a beautiful bronze tinge. In summer, cream-white blossom will appear, followed in autumn with fleshy pink berries. 40cm/27L 50cm/52L 100L
This is a lovely hardy foliage-feature tree with refreshing lime new growth and dense foliage to the ground. A great option for hedging or screening to around 5m tall. In summer, some white fluffy flowers appear, berry production is unlike other Lilly Pillies, with minimal quantities of small edible deep to light mauve berries that don't stain surfaces if left or crushed. 40cm/27L 50cm/52L 100L
A native shrub with a dense habit. This is a fast-growing variety well suited to hedging and screens. Compact glossy green foliage develops a lovely coppery hue in the new growth. During the warmer months, white fluffy blossom are borne, followed by fleshy red berries. 40cm/27L 50cm/52L
Unique to Speciality Trees and our best-selling and most popular tree! This is a versatile, bushy tree with a wonderful weeping habit making it perfect for large screening projects and the softening of fence lines. Propagated from Victorian mother-stock, unlike other Waterhousea, so responds better to all weather conditions, including cooler climates. New growth starts off pink and orange with leaves turning to various shades of green as the foliage matures. Foliage is maintained to the base of the plant giving a year-round lush, full appearance. It forms a small quantity of creamy-white flowers in summer. Berry production on 'Whisper' is unlike other Lilly Pillies, with minimal quantities of small green berries that, whilst bird attracting, these fruits are tucked in amongst the foliage and are not obvious. 30cm/14L 40cm/27L 50cm/52L 100L 150L 200L
This Lilly Pilly is a better form than the narrow growing 'Pinnacle' due to its dense foliage and naturally columnar form. Foliage is a mid-green colour and fruits are reddish-pink. As the name suggests it is a great selection for narrow spaces. 40cm/27L 50cm/52L 100L
