Small Natives in High Demand

Development trials on provenance grown natives suitable for residential and community planting is also ramping up with councils in particular, acknowledging the growing need to find and develop more species that fit within this popular short native tree category.

	Eucalyptus latens 'Moon Lagoon' Moon Lagoon Fine-leafed Mallee This is a dense shrub mallee with beautiful blue-green foliage when mature. In its juvenile state, its foliage is blue/silver so it is often clipped as a way to keep the blue/silver new growth. A great contrast tree in the landscape.
	Eucalyptus gregsoniana Wolgan, Dwarf Mallee Snow Gum This is a compact-growing, multi-branched snow gum capable of tolerating very cold conditions once established. We grow this specimen with a single trunk but naturally it is a multi-stemmed mallee with a weeping habit. The young stems are burgundy-red in colour. Thick, leathery, blue-green foliage contrasts well with these red coloured stems and smooth white to grey coloured bark which peels off in ribbons. This variety is summer flowering, producing fluffy white clusters of flowers.
	Corymbia citriodora 'Scentuous' (syn. 'Dwarf Pink') Dwarf Lemon-scented Gum This is a slightly narrow-domed Corymbia (syn. Eucalyptus), developed by Speciality Trees, doesn't shed its branches. It has a smooth trunk that may be slightly mottled. The bark is a pinky-salmon in colour. Leaves are narrow and highly aromatic when crushed smelling strongly of lemon. This tree features lovely cream-coloured flowers in summer.
	Eucalyptus cladocalyx nana Dwarf Sugar Gum This Australian native is a medium sized tree, usually multi stemmed, stout and solid in its growth habit. It is a much smaller growing tree than regular E. cladocalyx. It has yellow and blue-grey coloured bark with a mottled appearance. The foliage is a glossy dark green on top with paler undersides. During the warmer months, yellow flowers are produced, followed by large gumnuts.
	Corymbia eximia nana Dwarf Yellow Bloodwood A smaller version of Corymbia eximia (syn. Eucalyptus), the foliage is broad with a strong green colour and may turn a paler yellow/green in the colder months. The trunk adopts a gnarly, crooked appearance with mottled brown bark and in Spring the tree puts on an eye-catching display covering itself in creamy yellow flowers, attracting nectar loving birds.
	Corymbia maculata 'ST1' Lowanna Compact Spotted Gum A special selection of Corymbia (syn. Eucalyptus), developed by and exclusive to Speciality Trees, from Sale in Victoria. This denser version of straight C. maculata, is smaller in height with distinctive feature bark. The spotted trunk is cream and grey. The foliage is dark green and it forms a dense canopy. It has small white flowers that are clustered together.
	Eucalyptus scoparia Wallangarra White Gum This medium-sized Australian native tree originates from the elevated areas of the Wallangarra area in northern New South Wales. It is relatively fast growing with a short smooth trunk which is powdery white to grey in appearance and sheds. The broad, spreading crown has an open, weeping habit and bears narrow, shiny green leaves providing beautiful, dappled shade. In spring and summer, small white flowers appear followed by little oval gumnuts.
	Eucalyptus leucoxylon megalocarpa Large-fruited Yellow Gum This Australian native tree is small to medium in height with a compact, spreading habit. Technically this is a more compact growing form of the regular Yellow Gum Eucalyptus but produces bigger flowers. It has a nice spreading habit with beautiful olive-grey spear-shaped foliage. Similar to 'Rosea', it produces large pink-red, bird attracting flowers from late winter to spring and grows to a similar height with a good canopy.
