With their often blue grey-green appearance, shorter height and finer leaf form, dwarf native trees with a mature height of between 4m to 8m tall are hugely popular in the marketplace, and their appeal continues to grow. They represent a species type that we know will tolerate Australian conditions and they offer a compact growing alternative to the iconic trees found in gardens and state forests. Yet they have soil and climate preferences which still require specialist advice for placement and optimum potential.

Development trials on provenance-grown natives suitable for residential and community planting is also ramping up with councils in particular, acknowledging the growing need to find and develop more species that fit within this popular short native tree category.

Currently, there are some fabulous species to consider under 10m tall. Most of the trees highlighted here are suitable for the south-eastern parts of Australia, but it is always recommended to be guided by the advice of your grower.

Eucalyptus latens ‘Moon Lagoon’. Fall in love with this beautiful Fine Leafed Mallee Gum growing to 4m tall and a dense shrub with blue-green foliage. Juvenile growth is smallish in size and blue-silver so it is often kept clipped small to keep this leaf shape and colour so popular with contrast planting in landscaping and flower arranging.

Eucalyptus gregsoniana. This is a Dwarf Snow Gum growing to 5m tall with thick leathery, blue-green foliage which works to contrast with red coloured stems and smooth white to grey bark. There is so much to like about this tree, so suitable for smaller spaces and cold conditions hence its common name.

Eucalyptus leucoxylon ‘Euky Dwarf’. This is a shapely white trunked gum to 6m tall with a light, open canopy and smooth bark that sheds. Its grey-green leaves once mature are offset by masses of nectar-rich, pink, red and sometimes cream blossoms from late autumn to early summer. A real bird-attracting variety.

Corymbia citriodora ‘Scentuous. To be honest we cannot grow enough of this sort-after iconic beauty growing to approximately 7m tall. As a dwarf version of a lemon-scented gum it is highly regarded for its aroma, particularly after rain, as well as its compact and narrow form. Its smooth trunk is slightly mottled with bark an attractive, but subtle salmon colour. It is a grafted selection, so when we have advanced specimens for sale, they fly out the door!

Eucalyptus cladocalyx nana. This is another Dwarf Sugar Gum growing to 8m with attractive mottled yellow-blue-grey bark and glossy green foliage. It flowers in warmer months followed by large gumnuts for the kids to collect.

Eucalyptus eximia nana.  This is dwarf version of Corymbia eximia growing to 8m tall. Foliage is broad with a strong green colour and may turn a paler yellow/green in the colder months.  The trunk adopts a gnarly appearance with mottled brown bark and in spring the tree puts on an eye-catching display covering itself in creamy yellow flowers, attracting nectar loving birds.

Our tallest in this collection is Corymbia maculata ‘Lowanna’ which is a Dwarf form of spotted Gum to approximately 10m tall. This is a special selection originating from Sale in Victoria and is a denser version of straight maculata with the same iconic spotted trunk and feature bark as its much bigger parent.

Corymbia citriodora ‘Scentuous’ and Corymbia maculata ‘Lowanna’ are grafted forms which mean that numbers available to the market will continue to be limited so what is available. sells very quickly. Our advice is to lock down what you need in advance by talking directly to your supplier.

This is a dense shrub mallee with beautiful blue-green foliage when mature. In its juvenile state, its foliage is blue/silver so it is often clipped as a way to keep the blue/silver new growth. A great contrast tree in the landscape.
This is a compact-growing, multi-branched snow gum capable of tolerating very cold conditions once established. We grow this specimen with a single trunk but naturally it is a multi-stemmed mallee with a weeping habit. The young stems are burgundy-red in colour. Thick, leathery, blue-green foliage contrasts well with these red coloured stems and smooth white to grey coloured bark which peels off in ribbons. This variety is summer flowering, producing fluffy white clusters of flowers. 40cm/27L
A great choice where height restrictions are of concern, this shapely dwarf Eucalypt has a light, open canopy with a single trunk and smooth bark that sheds. Once more mature its grey-green leaves once mature are offset by masses of nectar-rich blossoms from late autumn to early summer, attracting native birds to the garden. NOTE: Seed grown - natural variation means individual tree may be a pink, red or cream flowering form. 40cm/27L 100L
This is a slightly narrow-domed Corymbia (syn. Eucalyptus), developed by Speciality Trees, doesn't shed its branches. It has a smooth trunk that may be slightly mottled. The bark is a pinky-salmon in colour. Leaves are narrow and highly aromatic when crushed smelling strongly of lemon. This tree features lovely cream-coloured flowers in summer. 40cm/27L 50cm/52L 100L
This Australian native is a medium sized tree, usually multi stemmed, stout and solid in its growth habit. It is a much smaller growing tree than regular E. cladocalyx. It has yellow and blue-grey coloured bark with a mottled appearance. The foliage is a glossy dark green on top with paler undersides. During the warmer months, yellow flowers are produced, followed by large gumnuts.
A smaller version of Corymbia eximia (syn. Eucalyptus), the foliage is broad with a strong green colour and may turn a paler yellow/green in the colder months. The trunk adopts a gnarly, crooked appearance with mottled brown bark and in Spring the tree puts on an eye-catching display covering itself in creamy yellow flowers, attracting nectar loving birds. 40cm/27L 100L
A special selection of Corymbia (syn. Eucalyptus), developed by and exclusive to Speciality Trees, from Sale in Victoria. This denser version of straight C. maculata, is smaller in height with distinctive feature bark. The spotted trunk is cream and grey. The foliage is dark green and it forms a dense canopy. It has small white flowers that are clustered together. 40cm/27L
This medium-sized Australian native tree originates from the elevated areas of the Wallangarra area in northern New South Wales. It is relatively fast growing with a short smooth trunk which is powdery white to grey in appearance and sheds. The broad, spreading crown has an open, weeping habit and bears narrow, shiny green leaves providing beautiful, dappled shade. In spring and summer, small white flowers appear followed by little oval gumnuts. 40cm/27L 50cm/52L 100L
This Australian native tree is small to medium in height with a compact, spreading habit. Technically this is a more compact growing form of the regular Yellow Gum Eucalyptus but produces bigger flowers. It has a nice spreading habit with beautiful olive-grey spear-shaped foliage. Similar to 'Rosea', it produces large pink-red, bird attracting flowers from late winter to spring and grows to a similar height with a good canopy. 40cm/27L
