Development contributes to urban heat

Remember that super hot January day in Sydney when records were broken? It just so happens that there was a Western Sydney University study being conducted at the same time and at the very spot where the hottest temperature was recorded on that history-breaking day.

Over a five week period temperature sensors clustered throughout Penrith recorded temperatures at 10 min intervals including those on 4th January 2020. The result now feeds a city's planning and design departments with the aim of addressing heat island effect.

“Without trees, summer heat becomes unbearable. In new housing estates where you have small blocks almost completely covered by houses with black roofs, it means there is simply no space to grow a meaningful canopy.” says Doctor Sebastian Phautsch from Western Sydney University.
