Irish Strawberry Tree (Arbutus unedo) is a favourite for large & small gardens.

Being accurate at plant identification is just one of the many talents Kate Seddon brings to landscape design. Her business Kate Seddon Landscape Design, is located off Chapel Street at 17 Bowling Green St, Windsor. She has been designing and creating beautiful landscapes since 2005.

Kate comes qualified and experienced with a Graduate Diploma in Horticulture from Burnley, as well as Landscape Design with Andrew Laidlaw (Landscape Architect at the Botanic Gardens). While Kate's focus has primarily been in residential landscaping, she has worked on a breadth of projects including community housing, development applications, some primary school planting schemes and rural landscapes.

The philosophy of the practice is to work with the site, surrounds, client and architecture, so each design is tailored to and influenced by these four elements.  Currently working on a range of residential landscapes in Middle Park, Ormond, Glen Iris, Elsternwick and South Yarra, these vary in size and scope: from a small rear spa courtyard from bare earth, to larger scale refurbishment of an existing garden.

In terms of trends in the industry, Kate is seeing a swing back to less water conscious gardening, which she feels is a pity, as the market had begun to understand and appreciate the new kind of lush, foliage-filled landscapes that could be achieved under dryer conditions with reduced water input.

As a supplier of quality tree material into Kate’s project’s we had to get her experienced take on trees, in particular her favourite ones. Heading the list is Arbutus, Lagerstroemia and Agonis flexuosa ‘Burgundy’. For four-seasons evergreen interest, and perfect for smaller gardens as well as a feature in a larger landscape, Arbutus unedo, the Irish Strawberry tree is very hardy and in time, quite drought tolerant.  Also, for four-seasons interest, the deciduous tree Lagerstroemia is magnificent for its bare twisting branches and bark, gorgeous spring foliage, intense summer flowering and autumnal colour.  For light screening and a beautiful small copse, Kate can’t go past Agonis flexuousa 'Burgundy'.

Kate is proud to be participating in the Garden Design Fest on November 17th & 18th.  Located at 311 Barkly Street Elwood, Kate’s design nestles a pool in a small front yard, completely surrounded and embraced by the garden.  Tickets can be purchased on the day or via the internet at www.gardendesignfest.com. Kate’s design is just one of 25 gardens open to the public across the weekend.
