A Guide to Banksia | Tried and True Lines for Landscaping

Banksias are almost Australian native royalty due to their breadth of range, resilience and adaptability in a host of microclimates from mountains and alpine regions to coastal areas. Ours are tall, single leader specimens suitable for projects requiring shelter, habitat, hedging or screening.

Given our extensive growing knowledge and expertise, we have limited our Banksia tree range to include only the most tried and true performers, suitable for Victoria and South Eastern parts of Australia.

These are uniquely structural for landscaping projects that require strong single leader specimens growing bigger than 5m tall. Coastal favourites for good reason, all produce the beautiful conical flowers synonymous with Banksia in general.

The introduction of Banksia integrifolia 'Sentinel' into the market meant that there is now a solution for narrower growing Banksia suitable for beds 1m wide. This is a considerable variation given that its parent, Banksia integrifolia, grows on average 6m wide!

All are flower-producing and superbly bird-attracting!

Our recommendations from smallest to tallest are below:

This Banksia has a dense growth habit with long green leaves bearing silver undersides. The leaves can have spiky or smooth margins. The large yellow cylinder shaped flowers are a stunning feature, attracting native birds and insects. The flowers are borne from spring to autumn. Grows to 5m tall. Can be used in native gardens and coastal areas, really anywhere with dry conditions. A good option for street planting or inland woodland environments. 40cm/27L
This distinctive native tree has rough patterned bark and long green leaves with a silver underside. Pale yellow, cylinder-shaped flowers can be seen in summer to winter and can be up to 12cm long. The seed pods stay on the branch for long periods and look very ornamental. This is an attractive feature tree. Great for coastal planting but can also work in urban settings as it is tolerant of most growing conditions. Can be pruned. Grows to 25m tall. Consider for front-line coastal plantings and headlands as they can tolerate salt spray. 40cm/27L 50cm/52L 100L
A smaller, more urban grower, this wonderful tree is perfect for use as a dense narrow flowering screen. Preferring full sun to light shade it produces upright lemon brush-like flowers from late summer to winter. Responds well to pruning. Great for small to medium gardens, large containers and narrow spaces. It's fastigiate in form growing 3m tall x 1m wide. Due to its height and form, it is a good selection for use along paths and driveways. 40cm/27L 50cm/52L 100L
