Evergreen or deciduous trees around pools? We suggest both! Here's why.

When buying a tree it is more important to select the right tree based on location, soil and position rather than if it is evergreen or deciduous. The same applies for around a pool too. Here's why.

What trees work well around pools?

This is a common question that we field every other day. To answer this, we generally have to tackle another misconception first. Too often the customer is set on selecting an evergreen tree, mainly because it 'doesn't shed its leaves'.  Wrong.

All trees shed leaves.

The difference between selecting evergreen over deciduous is that deciduous does it all in one season. In other words evergreen trees shed leaves too and across the year so the pool skimmer will be getting a work out throughout all seasons regardless of your selection.

And let's remember too that just because you can control the position and therefore the amount of leaf drop experienced at any one time of the year, doesn't mean that your neighbours do. Aided by the wind or even the subtlest of breezes, leaves will inevitably find their way into your backyard and into your pool.

The point we are trying to make is that other factors are much more relevant in the right selection of trees. For instance, do your trees need to be wind tolerant, salt tolerant or even chlorine tolerant? Do they need to thrive in full sun, dappled shade or deep shade? Are you wanting trees for significant canopy cover in summer? What soil type do you have?

Our tip: Don't be scared to use deciduous trees in your poolside landscape. A splash of colour in summer or striking bare limbs in winter add a wonderful dimension to your entertaining space. The addition of a big tree with a broad canopy will provide much needed sun protection during the hotter summer months.

Here are some deciduous selections to inspire you.

This deciduous tree has small oval shaped green leaves which turn a stunning reddish/orange in autumn. The most striking part of the tree is the beautiful display of vibrant, hot pink, crinkled flowers which appear in late summer. Flowers form on new growth, and so are encouraged by winter pruning. Bark peels off to reveal a smooth trunk which is beige in colour with red-brown streaks. 40cm/27L 50cm/52L 100L 150L
This is a very slow growing and long-lived, deciduous tree with a large and elegant habit. Considered quite an ancient tree, it is known to have origins dating back to Jurassic times and is often referred to as a living fossil. Specimens exist in its native origin, China which are estimated to be over 1000 years old. It has unique, double-lobed, fan-shaped leaves with veins which spread from the stalk of the leaf. Short catkins are produced, followed by yellow fruit and the foliage is a rich green, which turns a golden yellow in autumn. 100L
This is a striking feature tree which provides great summer shade. It has a uniform branch structure with bark which becomes deeply furrowed as it matures. Attractive dark green foliage is lighter on the underside and transitions through an array of colours starting with yellows, orange, fiery reds and rich burgundy as the weather cools in autumn. The leaves hold onto the tree longer into winter than other varieties of this species. 40cm/27L 50cm/52L 100L 150L
This is a beautiful, large, fast growing, deciduous tree with a broad, open, spreading canopy and weeping / pendulous branches. The dark to mid-green bipinnate leaves turn a rich yellow in Autumn, hanging gracefully from the tree well into the season. It is a popular selection for streetscapes and parks and a great choice for a feature shade tree in a larger garden. This is a thornless variety of Gleditsia. 40cm/27L 50cm/52L 100L 200L
This Manchurian Pear is a very popular selection largely due to the brilliant display of colour in Autumn. The dark green foliage is oval in shape with serrated edges and the onset of Autumn sees this leaves turning to a rich, dark red. Wider spreading than the 'Capital' or 'Cleveland Select', this form has a dense, rounded habit maturing to be a broad, medium-sized tree. Very early flowering, dark brown buds begin to open revealing a light pink colour before bursting into a beautiful spring show of white flowers. Small fruits follow the flowers, and although they are generally unpalatable to humans, birds and other wildlife have been known to feed off them. 40cm/27L 50cm/52L 100L 150L
This lovely small, deciduous tree has a moderate growth rate and great autumn colour in shades of orange, yellow and red. Bark is dark grey with shallow furrows and this variety is capable of withstanding relatively harsh conditions. Interesting pinnate leaves emerge green and leathery and although inconspicuous, clusters of small white flowers are borne in summer, followed by red drupes which mature to blue.
