Description This is deciduous, early-flowering, large shrub or small tree. Features 5-petaled, showy, slightly fragrant, white flowers in drooping clusters which appear before the leaves emerge in early spring. Leaves are finely-toothed and obovate. Flowers give way to small, round green berries which turn red and finally mature to a dark purplish-black in early summer. These are edible and resemble blueberries in size and color. Bird attracting.

Uses A native to Northern America, this pretty tree of moderate size works well as a feature tree in most gardens, on embankments and around lakes and ponds. It provides year-round interest with autumn colour, early spring flower and summer berries.    
Position & Soil This tree can tolerate moist to wet soil conditions, in clay, loam and sandy soils. Also suitable for colder climate gardens, should cope with frosts and light snow.
